They aren’t called Reckles for nothing. Picked (vocals),Fiki (guitar), Rindho (bass), Yonah (guitar), Elang (drums) of the indie band Reckles have a sound the boys describe in one word: dangerous. Playing with the current line-up since early this year being one of the few indie bands in Jakarta, Indonesia can be tough. So can you blame them for toying with the idea of developing a stand up act to fall back on? Check out what they had to say to Skratch Magazine.
Skratch How did you become interested in music?
Picked: Because with music I can criticize many things, I can liberate my thoughts.
Fiki: I don’t know, I forgot. I just do what I like.
Yonah: People insist! Please I don’t like music! Help me! Call 911! Hahaha
Rindho: It’s an accident actually, it happened when I was in junior high. I learn it from my schoolmate.
Elang: I learn music because financial intention, in order to get more money.=)
Skratch: What is your song writing process like?
Reckles: Sometimes lyrics first, sometimes melody first, we don’t have any certain process.
Skratch: What artists or musicians inspire you?
Picked: Fariz R.M, Slank (both Indonesian)
Fiki: Thom Yorke, I forgot the others.
Yonah: Chowder! (Cartoon Network)
Rindho: Robert Smith, Mark Stromer, Cholil “Efek Rumah Kaca” – Indonesian
Elang: Pancaran Sinar Petromaks, Koes Plus, God Bless (Indonesian)
Skratch: Where do you take musical inspiration from? Your environment? People? Explain.
Reckles: Everywhere, actually it taken from our imagination, or based on true events.
Skratch: What is your musical background?
Reckles: We all autodidact. (Cheap ass wins!).
Skratch: Tell us about how you got started as a band.
Reckles: First Yonah and Picked are band-mate since JHS (SEMS BAND), on SHS Yonah and Picked are no longer in the same band, Picked made new band with Fiki, Rindho, and two other members (ORDINARY BAND). Later Fiki resigns from the band and is replaced by Yonah. Then Picked, Yonah and Rindho also resign from the band, and Fiki join them back and together to make RECKLES. Sometimes after, Elank joined us as drummer. So the band is an evolution.
Skratch: What is the most rewarding part of playing in a band?
Reckles: Being famous!!
Skratch: What challenges have you faced as musicians?
Reckles: Haven’t found our community yet because our music is quite a minority here.
Skratch: What would you say is your best song to date? Why?
Reckles: “Wait a minute”. Sounds like the real Reckles.
Skratch: Where do you see your band in five years?
Reckles: Still together, keep our mind from speculation.
Skratch: Would you say your goals as a band are long term, or short term? What do you ultimately hope to achieve? Explain.
Reckles: Long term: well, just like other successful band, FAMOUS, RICH, and blah blah, blah. Short term: make EP, get gigs as much as possible, trying to be famous.
Skratch: How has your band evolved since when you first formed?
Reckles: First there not much sound effect but then we try to explore our music and get lot of sound effect.
Skratch: How often do you practice? What is your rehearsal time like?
Reckles: Once a week. It’s quite fun. It’s filled with laughs. LOTS of laughs.
Skratch: What would you say is your band's motto? Explain.
Reckles: In farts we trust!! There’s no lie in farts!! In indonesian: “dalam kentut tidak ada kebohongan”. Hahaha.
Skratch: What shows/album releases/plans do you currently have set up? Tell us about them.
We’re still amateur at the moment, we don’t have real a plan, just keep playing good, make songs, and put on a good show every time we’re on stage.=)
Skratch: Where have your performed? Tell us about the experience.
Reckles: Colleges, SHS, Brit rock communities. Every performance left us a memories, sometimes it feels great sometimes it’s not.
Skratch: What sets your stage show a part from all the other bands making the rounds at venues?
Reckles: We don’t have any certain setting, we want it but still adapting and haven’t found it yet.
Skratch: Anything else you think we should know about the band?
Reckles: We actually CAN make a comedy group IF we’re not successful in music. Hahaha. It’s not like we’re WANT it to, but we CAN. Really.
