Interview — Fall and Bounce

Skratch Magazine

French power pop band Fall and Bounce has an edge of borderline metal. “We associate powerful riffs, catchy guitar solos and female voice, which hasn’t often been done,” Geline (vocals/bass), Guillaume (guitars) and Yann (drums) say. Together as a band for nearly four years, they have Being a trio leaves the place for each instrument to express itself fully, which is the strength of our group.

Skratch: How did you become interested in music?

Celine: I started playing music at the age of 6 and I’ve had a long classical formation. My passion for singing really came to me in my teen’s and finds its expression today with Fall and Bounce. I started paying bass much later and the band now enables me to associate both passions.
Guillaume: One day, I met a guy in the street playing Bob Dylan. He showed me my first three chords. I didn’t even have a guitar at the time but everything started from there! Since then my instrument has never left me.
Yann: In my teens I did a fair bit of boxing it help me canalize my energy. A friend of mine showed me what he could do on the drums. And it just clicked. Paying the drums keeps me balanced and allows me to let of steam at the same time.

Skratch: What is your song writing process like?
Guillaume: I come up with the main riffs and then we all work on them together until the result pleases all of us.

Skratch: What artists or musicians inspire you?

Celine: If I had to name just one it would be James Hietfield.
Yann: For me I’d have to say Abe Cunningham
Guillaume: Slash, Zakk Wylde and more recently John 5. I can’t choose just one.
Celine: …not one of us mentioned a frenchy…we should be ashamed ; )

Skratch: Where do you take musical inspiration from? Your environment? People? Explain.

Celine: We get our inspiration from the people we meet: What they’ve to say , what they’ve to seen, what they’ve been through. Our starting point is always something or someone that has touched us in one way or another. For example “Taste of your medicine” describes well all the ass-holes that we’ve had the “pleasure” to meet.

Skratch: What is your musical background?

Guillaume: Before “Fall an Bounce”, I’d been in quite a few bands, in particularly “Horresco Reference” with who I recorded an album and did numerous concert.
Celine: Like I said I’ve been making music and giving concerts since I was little. However “Fall an Bounce” is my experience as singer and bass player. Yann: I started by creating a rock metal group, Samantha, which finished when I went to England. When I returned to France, the Fall and Bounce adventure started.

Skratch: Tell us about how you got started as a band.

Guillaume: We were all doing music in the Paris area. When we met we wanted to play together and share a mutual experience. It’s easy as that;

Skratch: What is the most rewarding part of playing in a band?

Céline: What’s great in a band is to be able to share our music with other. In my opinion there’s no point playing if it’s not a band
Guillaume: To see how simple riff can evolve into something that rocks the public.
Yann: It’s a very enriching personal experience, not only when we get together just the three of us, but also in front of our public.

Skratch: What challenges have you faced as musicians?

Guillaume: The biggest challenge for all of us is to get up on stage and to show a public what we’re worth in a limited amount of time.

Skratch: What would you say is your best song to date? Why?

Celine : “Change”, without a shdow of a doubt: Check it out on ours myspace.

Skratch: Do you remember the first album you ever bought? What was it?

Celine : Yes of course, “and justice for all”
Yann: As for me it was “Nevermind”
Guillaume: “Appetite for destruction”
Celine: … still no frenchies?
Yann:… euh ..No!

Skratch: Where do you see your band in five years?

Celine: In all the biggest concert halls
Guillaume: The Ozzfest would be cool
Yann: In front of 100000 people

Skratch: Would you say your goals as a band are long term, or short term? What do you ultimately hope to achieve? Explain.

Guillaume: Our objectives are long term. While it’s still a pleasure there’s no reason to stop.
Celine: This album is the first in a long line, we’ve already got lot of ideas for the next one.
Yann: long term as long as the public is listening we’ll keep playing.

Skratch: How has your band evolved since when you first formed?

Yann: The band has greatly evolved not only in our relations but also musically.

Skratch: How often do you practice? What is your rehearsal time like?

Celine: We get together every week. However the composing and the writing of the lyrics are all the personal responsibility of each member of the group. When we get together we share all ideas and we set to work. Its also the moment when we prepare for our upcoming concerts.

Skratch: What would you say is your band’s motto? Explain.

Guillaume: Motherfucker – in English –
Yann: He’s forever saying it and it’s sort of stuck.

Skratch: What shows/album releases/plans do you currently have set up? Tell us about them.

Guillaume: We’ve spent the summer recording our album in Paris, mixed by Stephane Buriez from Loudblast. We’re now preparing the promotional tout for the album “taste of your medicine”

Skratch: Where have your preformed? Tell us about the experience.

Yann: We’ve done lots of gigs in places in and around Paris; the first that come to mind are the Gibus, the O Sulivan and the Klub. Two years of concert have enabled us to fully master the stage. When the sound conditions aren’t favorable we make up for it with energy!

Skratch: What sets your stage show a part from all the other bands making the rounds at venues?

Celine: Our fans say that it’s our energy that makes the difference, the public doesn’t expect something so powerful from a trio.
Yann: No, it’s your mini skirt and red stockings that make the difference!

Skrathc: Anything else you think we should know about the band?

Celine: Our album “taste of your medicine” is finished and ready but we don’t yet have a distributor for the states.
