Italian band Supersonic isn’t pop. They’re not progressive either. Instead Marcello, Francesco, Gaetano, Massimiliano and Fabio are blend of the two for which they have coined the term “PopGressive.” Making music together for 12 years, Gaetano is convinced that their sound is the result of listening to experimental, electronic and the music of the 1970’s. Take a listen for yourself, but first check out what they had to say to Skratch Magazine.
Skratch: How did you become interested in music?
Marcello: When I was young I was thinking music was the only way to express myself. Really, It’s the same thought now. When I play I’m in another time, I’m another person, maybe I’m really me.
Francesco: My interest for music born when Gaetano “pissed me off”, forcing me to play.
Skratch: What is your song writing process like?
Gaetano: I wrote some songs, and this writing process was very natural because everything I was living was a good reason to write or play something.
Marcello: Yes, is the same thing for me, so everywhere I am, everything I do, everything people say is a good material to write, to play music.
Francesco: I’m the singer, so, first I write the words, then, with the other musicians we try to find a good melody.
Skratch: What artists or musicians inspire you?
Massimiliano: There are many musicians that have influenced our music: Oasis, first, Radiohead, Muse, Pink Floyd, some of the seventies Italian musicians like P.F.M., Balletto Di Bronzo, Area…
Fabio: Blur, Genesis, Animals, Camel.
Skratch: Where do you take musical inspiration from? Your environment? People? Explain.
Marcello: I think that everything in our life, experiences of mine or the experiences of the other people around me or far from me that I’ve seen, are material of inspiration for me. People are very important in this process, the relationship between me and the other. But the first thing I think that influences my vision of the music is the situation, the way, the environment I live. All musicians write and play what they live and what they see around them. How they live, the cultural situation in their country or in the world, what their vision of life is. All the things are important details that inspire me.
Skratch: What is your musical background?
Francesco: When I was young I listened only to seventies music, but then I’ve learned to listen and to love every musical kind.
Gaetano: Fundamentally I think there exists only good music and bad music.
Skratch: Tell us about how you got started as a band.
Francesco: I started in 2000 as a game, then I gave it my all.
Marcello: From classic guitar to now
Massimiliano: Thanks to Gaetano
Fabio: First we were only a group of young boys that after the school went to some empty room to play cover songs of Oasis, Blur.
Gaetano: Then we have begun to write, play and record our songs with hard work and satisfaction, becoming Supersonic.
Skratch: What is the most rewarding part of playing in a band?
Gaetano: For sure, to play live is the most interesting, funny and energetic part of making music and playing in a band.
Francesco: During the live concerts, that I prefer, I try to concentrate on being a true stage animal.
Skratch: What challenges have you faced as musicians?
Gaetano: Everyday we’re forced to fight to assert ourselves as musicians!
Skratch: What would you say is your best song to date? Why?
Marcello: Our best song is “The Chief”, because is the result of maturity as human being.
Skratch: Do you remember the first album you ever bought? What was it?
Gaetano: Atom Heart Mother of Pink Floyd.
Marcello: Be Here Now of Oasis
Massimiliano: The Snow Goose of Camel
Fabio: Modern Life Is Rubbish of Blur
Francesco: The Wall of Pink Floyd
Skratch: Where do you see your band in five years?
Marcello: We’ll be around the world, appreciated by all, sure!
Francesco: We will do a concert at Wembley Stadium, sold out!
Skratch: Would you say your goals as a band are long term, or short term? What do you ultimately hope to achieve? Explain.
Gaetano: We are working on a new album, we’ll begin to record between few days. So we have many plans for our future. We will continue to play music until the end of time, is our hope.
Skratch: How often do you practice? What is your rehearsal time like?
Gaetano: Two times to week, we have all a second job! We play in a room and we recorder with our instrumentation. A lot of this time is spent to play or make video, like our first of it: “Water”
Skratch: What shows/album releases/plans do you currently have set up? Tell us about them.
Massimiliano: We are in order to record our new album with some unreleased songs and some of our old songs with new arrangements.
Francesco: We hope to make many concerts in our country and out of this.
Skratch: Where have your performed? Tell us about the experience.
Fabio: Usually we played in some of our local city and streets Festival.
Marcello: We prefer to play in streets festival because there are many people, energy, adrenaline and chaos.
Francesco: In this type of events our own artistic personality is coming out.
Skratch: What sets your stage show a part from all the other bands making the rounds at venues?
Gaetano: For each show we try to play some of our original songs and some covers to create a good relationship between us and the people.
Skratch: Anything else you think we should know about the band?
Francesco: Music is an experience that must be lived. There are no words that can express the greatness. It would only trivialize it.
Gaetano: The message of our music is to live all the experiences of life naturally, without shame, without guilt, remembering every little feeling, face, emotion, vision and reflection.
Massimiliano: Hope to continue to grow as artists and as people, always having the courage to take risks.
